Elaborate Markings I: Poisoned Kiss

by Yume | August 2nd, 2010

I am introducing a new segment. Due to a various amount of emails, formspring questions, and messages regarding my makeup and hair – I’ve decided to start a tutorial section on here.

First, I’m very flattered that people are interested in my fledgling makeup skills when there are plenty of awesome makeup gurus around! Secondly, I’d like to add that I’m not a professional. All my makeup and hair is trial-and-error.

Here we go!

I’ve had a few questions come up regarding my gradient lips! So here you guys go!

My kisses are poisonous!

You will remember my poisoned purple lips from a month ago! Actually this look is really simple!

1. Grab your concealer or lip primer! Or any thing that will help lipstick stay on your lips! I use my time balm concealer, as it’s not the same concealer I use for my bags.

2.  Spread the concealer (or lip primer) over your lips. this will also help the lipstick/gloss from bleeding out of your lips!

3.  Grab your black eyeliner! I currently have a Rimmel London one I specifically use for my lips. I would not suggest using the same one you use on your eyes. Line your lips with the eyeliner.

4.  Now, using black lipstick, fill in your lips! I’m using my beloved Pristine by Illamasqua because it’s nice and matte!

5. Make corrections if you need to! i had to go back and fix my cupids bow with eyeliner!

6. Now grab your preferred shade of LOOSE purple eye shadow! I’m using Surgarpill’s Chromalust in HYSTERIC! You can use any loose purple shadow, but I prefer Sugarpill’s Hysteric because of it’s high pigmentation and glittery quality.

7. With your fingers, dip into the eyeshadow and press onto the inner sections of your lips. Don’t go all the way out, as you want a gradient effect! So you want to keep the outer parts of your lips very black.

This will take 2-3 layers of shadow. The first layer is a larger section of your inner lips, then the 2nd is closest to the center, and the 3rd being just the top center and bottom center. This makes the eyeshadow more opaque in the center and fade out towards the outside.

8. Now the real trick, CLEAR GLOSS.

This will help you blend the black and purple much easier. So with a brush, apply the clear gloss, OUTSIDE to INSIDE. the brush will pick up a fair amount of black which you can use to blend into the purple!

9.  Fix the black liner if you need to redefine the shape, but don’t add more lipstick or shadow at this point! or it will get ugly and clumpy!

10. FIN!

You can also apply this method with red/black, or blue/black, or anything and black!

My ending notes are however:

I apply the eyeshadow over a black lipstick base because I like a darker gradient. If you want to have a brighter center, you should apply similar shade of lipstick in the center of your lips and use the eyeliner to blend the black inawrds. When you apply the shadow to the lipstick color, the center will be much brighter!

If you guys try it out or have better methods feel free to post in the comments! I know mine is not the official way, but it’s the way I’ve come up with thus far that works!

Have fun!
