Save the Thundercats!

by Yume Ninja-Sovereign | June 13th, 2012

Cheetara (Jenny), Tygra (Marisha), Lion-O (Chloe), Panthro (Traycee)

When my friends Jenny and Marisha asked me to get involved in their ‘Save ThunderCats’ project,; I was more than happy to oblige. With my Sugarpill cosmetics in tow, I put on my Makeup Artist hat and helped these ladies bring the characters to life.

Cartoon Network’s ThunderCats

As someone who grew up in the mid-80s and enjoyed the original ThunderCats series, I have a lot of love for the rebooted series.

Like other rebooted 1980s series such as HUB‘s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic; the new ThunderCats series is well animated and well written. Trust me, the new series is awesome if not better than its predecessor.

Though the series is just starting to gain attention, it looks like Cartoon Network has already unofficially taken them out of Fall season. The slow start may be due to the poor decisions in debuting this series on Friday nights. The pick up of the show began once Cartoon Network changed the show time to Saturday mornings. Yes, that magical time where children usually watch TV.

Bad choices aside, like Marisha, Jenny, and all of you geek girls out there: I’m not willing to let this cancellation happen with out a fight!

Why do I care so much?

Back in 1985, my brother Mike and I would go down into the basement after every show and pretend we were Lion-O and Cheetara. We would pretend we were fighting Mumm-Ra and wield our swords, that’s why.

Shows like ThunderCats helped fueled my imagination, my interests, and eventually my own creativity. If I could get that much from it in 1985, imagine what children in 2012 could do 30 years from now from the reboot?

Ben, you’ve just refuted criasionetm. Here’s the thing: The moment you acknowledge that one part of the fiction is ridiculous and try to explain it away, you just end up calling attention to everything else that doesn’t work. It’s kind of like how Peter Jackson’s King Kong had to (implicitly) acknowledge that Kong is the last survivor of his race by showing the bones of other Kongs on the island. Well, once you take the mythical element out of Kong and make him the member of a species, then other things start calling attention to themselves. How could a gorilla possibly be that big without collapsing under its own weight? What biological pressures would make it that big? Could an ecosystem even support such a creature? Questions like this.Or a better example: Midichlorians. Feel that vein in your forehead? That’s rage. We’ve all been there. Now, personally, I don’t think Thundercats is anywhere near that bad. I think that they have enough fantasy wrapped into the show that there’s really no need for an explanation as to how these cats are able to exist. For whatever reason, they just do, and as long as they don’t try to explain away this issue, I think it’ll be fine. I mean, I didn’t even notice it until Ben brought it up.

  2. Whilst the series on paper appears to be about Lion-O, in actual fact the series is about all the characters and the way they interact with each other in a way that is engaging and believable. The series is about a family, about characters growing and evolving, about action, adventure and fantasy.
