That one time I went to a Bridal Show…
by Yume Ninja-Sovereign | August 17th, 2012
So I have never given too much thought into weddings and such, because I have never really been to a wedding…

When my good friend Sheyne of the League of Steam: Junior Watch asked me to be one of her four bridesmaids at her wedding, I was really flattered, confused, and excited all at once.
Why confused? Because I’ve never been a part of a wedding or even been to one (other than from my own culture)…. so I have no idea what it involves. And now I know that, well, it involves going to Bridal Shows!

Going downtown to the convention center has become a lot easier now that I have access to freeway friendly buses and trains.
I donned my neon bests, featuring Catwoman, and headed out.

On the way there, I noticed a lot of Shaun White advertisements for Target. There are a lot of ‘City Targets’ popping up in LA now. We just got one in West LA too.
When I got to the convention hall, it was a bit confusing because Adult XPO was also happening the same day. Brides and Porn stars, who knew?
I met up with my friend Sheyne and my fellow bridesmaids as we gathered up our checklists and made our way in.

There were some really cute vendors like ‘Daily Petal’. I think she had some of the most imaginative floral decorations.

These decorations and table settings are bit more traditional I think, but just a nice.

There seems to be a big boom in party photobooths. We ran into a few vendors who all had some kind of a ‘photobooth’ setup for weddings.
One of these vendors had a set up similar to PURIKURA, and also these awesome super hero masks for us. Jenny and I took advantage of this.

I never really though about exactly how many details there are to a wedding.
Since becoming a bridesmaid, I’ve been doing a lot more research… aka watching wedding/bridal shows. There is HELLA shit to be done.
I don’t know if I could ever try to have a big wedding, but I’m really happy to experience it with my friends.

Since we’re on the subject on weddings, lets talk wedding dresses.
I can’t say I have ever looked at wedding dresses until now. However, I discovered that I really like simple dresses.
The above two models had on my favourite dresses of the day. The dresses seem so comfortable.
Of course, there were also dresses at the show for sale! So Glenn (the groom to be) suggested we (the bridesmaids) take photos in wedding dresses and send them to our boyfriends. Evil Glenn.

So we grabbed two dresses each, and lord, across the board, we all looked awkward in our first dresses. I think this is due to most of these dresses being a size 12.
I looked absolutely horrible in the first dress. Remind me, if I ever buy a wedding dress, NO SLEEVES, especially beaded sleeves.

Surprisingly, I think we all looked really good in our second dresses. Mine was really nice. It had a layer of lace and beading under a layer of chiffon. I also think the bodice made my neck and shoulders look better. Jenny’s dress was really gorgeous.
When we looked at the details put into each dress, it was very easy to see why these dresses were so well made and why they looked so amazing.
Alas, I don’t see myself ever buying a $3,000USD dress for ONE day. I think this is my very practical and frugal side talking . If I were to spend $3,000 on anything, I’d have to be able to get more than 1 use out of it.

These Aqua Bubbles were fascinating. They’re a fun and colorful replacement for water in flower vaces. The bubbles are still mostly water, and require water to become inflated, but they come in really fun colors.

CAKE!!!!!
You should have seen the mad dash for free cake! I laughed and obviously joined in. I usually am not a huge fan of cake, but after trying their strawberry cake and their coconut vanilla, I can say I liked that cake.

The last photobooth vendor we saw was this one. I really loved their set up. So many of their photos (engagement) were really imaginative and fun. It was right up my alley.
I was really inspired by the many different ways they styled their photoshoots.
Well now I can officially say that I have survived a Bridal Show! Next up is the Bridal Shower.
I’m learning so much about traditional(esque) American weddings through this wedding. I can see why so many girls across the country are really excited about weddings.
How about you guys, do you know what you want to do for your wedding?

I understand 100% what you are talking about. I do not plan on looking like a princess for my wedding either, although I did find a dress at Davids Bridal that I LOVE…I think it is very “little house on the prarie ish”!! I know that J-Crew makes wedding dresses. Are you thinking different but poofy stil?? Or no poofs, no sparkles, no lace…etc?? I saw a really great crocheted on in one of my bridal magazines. Can you give us some more info about what you invision?

The most expensive part of my wedding was my dress. The rest of it we kept super low key. I had all my flowers done from the local grocery store! We got married outside at a park I used to go when I was a little girl, then turned around to a little inn across the path and had a brunch with close friends and family. It was more of a cafe experience for everyone than a hyped up party.
The nice thing about those expensive dresses is that there is a market for gently used ones and borrowed dresses. If any of my friends or friends of friends want to use my dress, it is theirs as long as they get it re-dry cleaned.
Being that we used a smaller wedding budget we were able to do a better honeymoon abroad the next summer
Oh man, weddings have zero appeal to me. It just sounds like a big waste of time, money and super stress! Although of course, I love attending them :’) I’ve always been too much of a tomboy to care about getting married. Plus, my parents divorced when I was very young so it tainted the idea of marriage for me.
My grandmother is a dress maker and she has made dresses for hundreds of weddings and so forth. She has a wall of photos from her clients weddings and she points to a bunch of photos and says “divorced, divorced, divorced” and a lot of them didn’t last a year! Some of them even spent thousands of dollars for their big day and the marriage didn’t last. It’s a shame.
That being said, if I ever somehow wind up agreeing to marriage, I would keep it simple: do all the paper work at city hall, then a quiet, small, private reception dinner at a restaurant. Nothing fancy. I’m also not a fan of dresses so I’d probably just dress up in something different than I normally wear x3
